On 21 January 2019, Spain and the UK signed a bilateral agreement regulating voting rights of Britons in Spain and Spaniards in the UK. The total number of people concerned in both countries is about 0.5 million.
Under the current EU law, all EU nationals living in another Member State have active and passive voting rights. These rights are now a point of contention as the UK is about to leave the EU. The agreement enables Spanish nationals in the UK and British nationals resident in Spain to maintain their voting rights at the local level once the UK leaves the EU.
