In the Delmi-GLOBALCIT Policy Brief entitled How Citizenship Laws Differ: A Global Comparison (2018:9), Rainer Bauböck (European University Institute), Maarten Vink (Maastricht University) and Iseult Honohan (University College Dublin) analyse the inclusiveness of provisions in citizenship laws in 175 states. They measure how much scope citizenship laws worldwide leave to individual choice, and whether they meet basic standards of non-discrimination and the rule of law. The analysis is based on GLOBALCIT’s rich comparative data, which reveals that the variety of citizenship laws and policies are best understood within a global perspective that compares the opportunities and implications of becoming a citizen in different contexts.
