Stephen Coutts is a Lecturer in European Union Law in the Law School at the University of Edinburgh. Prior to joining the University of Edinburgh, he held posts at University College Cork and Dublin City University. He has held visiting teaching positions at the London School of Economics and University of Paris II, Pantheon-Assas. He holds a PhD from the European University Institute and an LLM from the College of Europe, Bruges. He is a member of the editorial board of European Papers and formerly on the editorial board of the Irish Journal of European Law.
He is on the Advisory Board of the Irish Centre of European Law and a former President of the Irish Association of Law Teachers. His areas of research include the pre-requisites and dynamics of legal integration, EU citizenship and the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice and EU constitutional law. He is particularly interested in the interaction of transnational and supranational legal phenomena. He also has an interest in political theory, criminal law theory and philosophy. He has presented and published widely on these topics
