The centre right party UMP, currently in opposition, proposes to restrict the acquisition of French nationality through jus soli in a new Bill to be presented at the National Assembly in the near future. 

 

The proposal came in the aftermath of the highly controversial deportation of Leonarda Dibrani, a 15 year old high school student from Kosovo, who was arrested by border police during a school trip.

 

Whilst the exact content of the Bill is still to be clarified, the proposal immediately evinced important dissensions within the party.
