After a year of political unrest, parliamentary elections with historically low turnout and unprecedented loss of trust in the government and the political system as a whole, Bulgarians consider to make voting compulsory and to introduce electronic voting to boost the participation of the large emigrant population. After a proposal for referendum on these questions made by the president was rejected by the government, a citizens’ initiative gathered more than 500,000 signatures in its support. While the reluctant government is still counting, now it is obliged by the law to hold a referendum on electoral reform during this year.
