On September 9, the Romanian Government passed an emergency ordinance amending the Citizenship Law that facilitates the acquisition of citizenship by foreigners with special performances in sports, culture or other areas contributing to the promotion of Romania’s image in the world. The fast-track procedure exempts applicants from requirements regarding residence (currently 8 years), language & knowledge about the country and economic self-sufficiency. Conditions of age (18 years), good behaviour and loyalty towards the country are kept in place. The measure is intended primarily to expedite the naturalisation of sportsmen.
