Dual citizenship for Lithuanians with ‘special merits’

On 22 December, the Lithuanian parliament adopted amendments to the country’s citizenship law, allowing dual citizenship for Lithuanians with ‘special merits’, defined as activities that strengthen Lithuania’s statehood, power and authority internationally. The current Constitution forbids dual citizenship except in cases defined by law. The earlier Law on Citizenship foresaw dual citizenship only for persons who fled Lithuania before 11 March 1990 or acquired citizenship automatically by birth or through marriage. The law will come into force on 1 July 2016.
