On 26 October 2011 Bosnia and Herzegovina ratified an agreement on dual citizenship with Croatia. The agreement was adopted in 2007 but had failed to be ratified by the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency in the past. The agreement affects approximately 800,000 de facto dual Bosnian and Croatian citizens, most, but not all of whom, are ethnic Croats. They would have risked losing Bosnian citizenship had the law not been ratified before a January 2013 deadline.
