A bill is pending in the Canadian parliament which would restrict the access to citizenship. It will also empower the government to withdraw citizenship of persons suspected in terrorist activities and shield such decisions from effective judicial review. Unlike a similar bill currently considered in the British parliament, Canadian citizenship will not be withdrawn if the person would become stateless. The bill was severely criticised in the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration on 7 May by citizenship expert Patti Tamara Lenard from the University of Ottawa and is raising the concerns of the expert community worldwide.
