This week the Mexican Senate approved a constitutional reform to allow limitless transmission of Mexican citizenship by birth to third and subsequent generations born abroad.
By doing so, the Mexican Senate removed a 1997 restriction on ius sanginis citizenship transmission by birth abroad, by which the Mexican parent/s had to be born in Mexican territory in order to pass-on citizenship by birth. Under the new law, there is no limit in the number of generations since emigration for the transmission of Mexican nationality. This change still needs to be confirmed by the Mexican Congress, but since it was approved by unanimity in the Senate, a congressional confirmation is expected to follow.
