Expert dialogue on Austrian citizenship reform

The Austrian Federal Ombudsman Terezija Stoisits and the Vienna Counselling Centre for Migrants hosted an expert dialogue on a pending reform of the Austrian citizenship law on 17 September 2012.

The dialogue was attended by civil servants from federal and provincial authorities, NGOs and academic researchers and discussed proposals for an amendment that is due to be discussed in parliament this autumn as well as the need for broader reforms.

EUDO CITIZENSHIP co-director Rainer Bauböck presented CITLAW indicators developed within the ACIT project to illustrate where Austria’s citizenship differs significantly from a European average. EUDO CITIZENSHIP experts Gerd Valchars and Joachim Stern presented statistical evidence and legal arguments for a comprehensive reform of Austrian citizenship.
