In 2010, the Hungarian Parliament passed an amendment to the Hungarian Citizenship Act that provides for a preferential and accelerated naturalisation of Hungarians who are descendants of former citizens. The new citizenship law took effect on Monday 3 January, 2010, and many people from neighbouring countries are already applying for Hungarian citizenship.
