Between 2009 and 2014, 26,000 persons have acquired Luxembourgish citizenship, a sharp increase compared to earlier periods. Most naturalised citizens are in fact former citizens and their descendants residing in Belgium or France who ‘recovered’ their nationality in the wake of a 2008 reform of the nationality law. The 2008 reform introduced a broader toleration of multiple citizenship and contained a provision allowing former citizens ‘by origin’ to (re)acquire citizenship, irrespective of their country of residence.
