Finland accepted multiple citizenship with a broad consensus across the political parties in 2003. However, it was not until the autumn of 2014 that the issue of dual citizenship reached public consciousness when President of the Republic highlighted the need for a comparative review of multiple citizenship and its conditions in different countries. The number of applications for Finnish citizenship has grown considerably this year, and the processing time decreased despite of this. However, the number of positive decisions on these application remains the same – in 2014 only 3,931 individuals were naturalised, compared to 4,202 in 2013.
