John Torpey is Presidential Professor of Sociology and History and Director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies at the City University of New York, Graduate Center.  Among numerous books and articles, he is the author of The Invention of the Passport: Citizenship, Surveillance, and the State (2000), a revised second edition of which appeared from Cambridge University Press in 2018.
