The age of enfranchisement in UK devolved and general elections is facing renewed scrutiny in the wake of last week’s Scottish referendum, in which 16 and 17 year olds participated for the first time as part of the national electorate. Labour leader Ed Miliband yesterday reiterated his party’s commitment to granting the right to vote in UK general elections to those aged 16 and above in a speech delivered to the Labour Party annual conference, echoing similar calls made by Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond in a speech to the Scottish Parliament following the referendum on Thursday.
